报告摘要: Mechanical metamaterials denote an unconventional class of materials that offer an excellent platform to study various microscopic phenomena at the macroscopic level. Defects, and in particular topological defects, are architectural motifs that play a crucial role in the mechanical behavior of natural materials. In this talk, I will provide a systematic strategy to design complex metamaterials and introduce topological defects that usually occur in the microscopic world. The distinct mechanical signature of topological defects is uncovered by theory, experiments, and simulations, and is leveraged to design metamaterials with complex mechanical response. This work opens an avenue for constructing smart-response materials.

报告人简介: Erdal C. Oğuz obtained his PhD from Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany. His doctoral studies have addressed structure formation and dynamics in colloidal systems under confinement. In his postdoctoral studies at University of Düsseldorf, Princeton University, and Tel Aviv University, he investigated various aspects of soft condensed matter including self-assembly, hyperuniformity, mechanical metamaterials, and glass transition. In 2022 he joined the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as a faculty member. Dr. Oğuz is a theoretical physicist with a research portfolio that contains purely theoretical works of academic interest as well as practical research with potential real-life applications.
