报告摘要:Rheology is a science on flow and deformation of materials. In the 19th century, physicists invented a way of understanding solid and fluid, and created solid-mechanics and fluid-mechanics. They became the base of the 20th century’s industrial development. In the 20th century, new materials, polymers and colloids appeared, and became indispensable in our life. They are neither solid, nor liquid. This created a new branch of science“Rheology 流変学”. In the 21st century, further break through is needed to deal with living matter. Here I woudl like to give an overview for the past of rheology and the future of rheology.

Masao Doi obtained his Doctoral Degree at University of Tokyo in 1976, and started to work at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Nagoya University and Tokyo University in Japan. From 1976 to 1978, he worked with Sam Edwards on the molecular theory for polymer rheology. He has been working on various problems in soft matter dynamics, rheology, diffusion, permeation and drying. He is an author of “The theory of polymer dynamics” (co-authored with Sam Edwards) and “Soft matter physics”. He is an Honorary Fellow of Institute of Physics UK, and a foreign member of National Academy of Engineering USA.
